Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival 2026 in Singapore: Reunion, Light and Hope

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on 25 September 2026, but the festive spirit is already shining brightly across Singapore. Colourful lanterns illuminate our surroundings, mooncakes fill the shops, and families and friends prepare to celebrate a season of reunion, gratitude and togetherness.

This year, we visited Lights by the Lake at the Singapore Jurong Lake Gardens, where beautiful lantern displays transformed the peaceful surroundings into a vibrant celebration of Chinese culture and tradition.

A Beautiful Evening at Lights by the Lake

The illuminated lotus flowers created a serene and uplifting scene against the darkness of the garden. In Chinese culture, the lotus represents purity, harmony and renewal. Rising clean and beautiful from the water, it reminds us to remain positive and true to our values through every challenge.

Nearby, colourful koi lanterns appeared to swim across the lake, with their reflections shimmering on the water. Fish are traditionally associated with the expression 年年有余, meaning “may there be abundance year after year.”

The koi also represents perseverance, progress and prosperity—meaningful wishes not only for families, but also for businesses and the relationships that help them grow.

The Full Moon and the Jade Rabbit

At the heart of the Mid-Autumn Festival is the full moon, which symbolises reunion, harmony and fulfilment. No matter where we may be, looking at the same moon reminds us of the people and relationships that connect us.

In Chinese tradition, the Jade Rabbit lives on the moon alongside Chang’e, preparing the elixir of immortality. Over time, it has become a cherished symbol of companionship, kindness, good health and hope for a bright future.

Lanterns also carry a special meaning during the festival. Their warm light represents hope, good fortune and a path towards a brighter tomorrow.
